From The Critics: BookList...Berry tells his stories of contemporary Jamaica with a joyful exuberance, rooted in the oral tradition, that demands they be read aloud. Though this collection doesn't have the depth of his stories for older readers in "A Thief in the Village" (1988), he does communicate the same strong sense of place and family, this time often a middle-class family. The title piece is the weakest--heavy-handed therapeutic talk about a kid who steals to make up for feeling small. In contrast, the best tale is rich with character and comedy: a small boy can't wait to spend a week with his grandmother, and he glories in his older siblings' jealousy; but once he's away, he's overwhelmed with homesickness--he hates being fussed over, and comes home the first night. The last story, "Mr. Mongoose and Mrs. Hen," is an unforgettable, sad, violent farmyard allegory. It's all the more dramatic after the cheery, upbeat stories that have gone before; you keep thinking that things will be reversed and that the weak will finally get what they deserve. But they don't.
