Kincaid, Jamaica Annie John: A Novel Farrar, Straus and Giroux 1997 0374525102 / 9780374525101 Paperback Good Paperback Small amount of underlining / notes that you could easily miss when flipping through the book. Light edge wear and a very minor top layer tear on back corner (about 1/4). Overall, this book is really in great shape and you will be happy with the condition! Review: Jamaica Kincaid beautifully delineates hatred and fear, because she knows they are often a step away from love and obsession. At the start of Annie John, her 10-year-old heroine is engulfed in family happiness and safety. Though Annie loves her father, she is all eyes for her mother. When she is almost 12, however, the idyll ends and she falls into deep disfavor. This inexplicable loss mars both lives, as each grows adept at public falsity and silent betrayal. The pattern is set, and extended: "And now I started a new series of betrayals of people and things I would have sworn only minutes before to die for." In front of Annie's father and the world, "We were politeness and kindness and love and laughter." Alone they are linked in loathing. Annie tries to imagine herself as someone in a book--an orphan or a girl with a wicked stepmother. The trouble is, she finds, those characters' lives always end happily. Luckily for us, though not perhaps for her alter ego, Kincaid is too truthful a writer to provide such a finale. NOTE: Publisher overstock books may have a remainder mark. Kincaid, Jamaica Lucy Farrar, Straus and Giroux 1990 0374194343 / 9780374194345 Hardcover Good Good Hardcover Light edge wear to jacket and book. Top edge of book has spec marks from age and shelf storage. Inside is clean and excellent. From Publishers Weekly: Kincaid ( At the Bottom of the River ; Annie John ) has with this novel created an insouciant yet vulnerable narrator in the person of Lucy, a teenage girl from the West Indies who works as an au pair for a seemingly happy family in an unidentified city that one assumes is New York. Lucy is fascinated with her discoveries about American life--"At first it was all so new that I had to smile with my mouth turned down at the corners"--and with Mariah, Lewis and their four golden little daughters. Their pleasure in life intrigues Lucy, who observes, "Even when a little rain fell, they would admire the way it streaked through the blank air." Lucy has renounced her own family and past, but at the same time she paradoxically expresses culturally imbued views with arrogance. She sees the world around her with both awe and contempt, and maintains a unique dead certainty about how people are. Her own sexual exploits seem more mysterious to her than the deterioration of Lewis and Mariah's marriage, which she presciently and detachedly observes. This is a slim book but Kincaid has crafted it with a spare elegance that has brilliance in its very simplicity. Lucy's is a haunting voice, and Kincaid's originality has never been more evident. First serial to the New Yorker; Literary Guild selection. NOTE: Publisher overstock books may have a remainder mark. A remainder mark is a mark on the bottom or top edge that is added just to assure that it is not returned to the store!
